A Beautiful Place to Die: A Novel By Malla Nunn $15 Award-winning screenwriter Malla Nunn delivers a stunning and darkly romantic crime novel set in 1950s apartheid South Africa, featuring Detective Emmanuel Cooper — a man caught up in a time and place where racial tensions and the raw hunger for power make life very dangerous indeed.
In a morally complex tale rich with authenticity, Nunn takes readers to Jacob’s Rest, a tiny town on the border between South Africa and Mozambique. It is 1952, and new apartheid laws have recently gone into effect, dividing a nation into black and white while supposedly healing the political rifts between the Afrikaners and the English. Tensions simmer as the fault line between the oppressed and the oppressors cuts deeper, but it’s not until an Afrikaner police officer is found dead that emotions more dangerous than anyone thought possible boil to the surface.
When Detective Emmanuel Cooper, an Englishman, begins investigating the murder, his mission is preempted by the powerful police Security Branch, who are dedicated to their campaign to flush out black communist radicals. But Detective Cooper isn’t interested in political expediency and has never been one for making friends. He may be modest, but he radiates intelligence and certainly won’t be getting on his knees before those in power. Instead, he strikes out on his own, following a trail of clues that lead him to uncover a shocking forbidden love and the imperfect life of Captain Pretorius, a man whose relationships with the black and coloured residents of the town he ruled were more complicated and more human than anyone could have imagined.
The first in her Detective Emmanuel Cooper series, A Beautiful Place to Die marks the debut of a talented writer who reads like a brilliant combination of Raymond Chandler and Graham Greene. It is a tale of murder, passion, corruption, and the corrosive double standard that defined an apartheid nation. I |

A Furnace Afloat: The Wreck of the Hornet and the Harrowing 4,300-mile Voyage of Its Survivors $16.99 In the tradition of Nathaniel Philbrick’s bestselling In the Heart of the Sea, Joe Jackson’s A Furnace Afloat tells of the American clipper ship Hornet, which went down in flames, casting its crew adrift for forty-three days on the open ocean. Along with the stories of the Bounty and the whaleship Essex, the Hornet disaster was once one of the country’s most infamous naval disasters.
Over the years, a handful of famous shipwrecks have become symbols of something greater, their accounts a floating opera of sudden disaster, wasted life, and privations endured by survivors. One of these was the 1866 saga of the clipper ship Hornet, the crew of which barely survived for six weeks on ten days’ worth of rations and shoe leather, drifting 4,300 miles in a single lifeboat as they all slowly weakened and became delirious or mad.
The American clipper ship Hornet left her homeport of New York City on January 15, 1866, and embarked on what was considered a routine voyage to San Francisco around Cape Horn. She enjoyed an exceptionally smooth passage until the morning of May 3, when the ship ghosted gently a thousand miles west of the Galápagos Islands. On that day, the first mate went below to draw some varnish from a cask and accidentally set the cask afire. Within minutes, the entire ship was engulfed.
The ship’s company of thirty-one men escaped into three small boats, set adrift under the burning sun of the Pacific Ocean to watch helplessly as the Hornet became a floating bonfire and sank beneath the waves.
The Hornet’s complement — twenty-nine officers and crew, and two aristocratic passengers — mirrored all the prejudices and nuances of Industrial Age America. Their ordeal was harrowing: half of the Hornet’s crew disappeared; the survivors were stalked by sharks and waterspouts, desiccated by heat, driven mad by lack of food and water. Soon the social divisions in the boat erupted into class war |

A Life in Smoke: A Memoir By Julia Hansen $20.95 ”I accepted the certainty of my untimely death with gallows humor and a calculator. I’d read somewhere that each cigarette you smoke knocks seven minutes off your time on the planet. To amuse myself, I did the math: 153,000 cigarettes = two years of my life, up in smoke.”
Julia Hansen first lit up at nineteen. Twenty years later, she was editing books about health — and smoking a pack or two a day. She denied her son fast food, but smoked in the house and car; curtailed his video games, but lit up at his soccer matches. Despite repeated attempts to quit, she always crawled back to her beloved menthol lights. Smoking had become a metaphorical chain around her neck, shackling her to an early death.
Haunted by a nightmarish vision of her future — her son at her deathbed, begging her not to leave him — Hansen devised a drastic quit method. She bought a 72-foot length of chain that was “unwieldy as a corpse” and locked herself to a radiator in her dining room. What followed: seven days of cold-turkey misery, comic absurdity, and revelation as Hansen stepped from behind her wall of smoke to face her addiction to nicotine — and some painful truths.
Clanking around her house like Marley’s ghost, white-knuckling cravings, and struggling to understand tobacco’s unyielding grip on her, Hansen confronted her life in smoke: fractured relationships, lifelong battles with alcohol and depression, and a profound sense of emptiness. On day 1, the chain was her addiction to nicotine, each link a story about cigarettes and self-loathing. By day 7, it had revealed its ringing, rattling truth — that every smoker has a story, and it always centers on clinging to a comfort that can kill you. In the end, Hansen’s story was painfully simple: She smoked to survive her life. And then, to save it, she quit.
Fierce and funny, honest and utterly absorbing, A Life in Smoke is Julia Hansen’s evocative and inspiring account of the extreme measures she took to quit smoking |

Why is it so easy for girls like Jessica to get pregnant — and so hard for her? Is it possible to want a baby too much?
Lisa’s teenage daughter, Callie, is giving her the silent treatment. A Million Shades of Gray By Cynthia Kadohata $5.99
Y’Tin is brave.
No one in his village denies that. And while his mother may wish that he’d spend more time on schoolwork than on training his elephant, she knows that it takes a great deal of courage and calm to handle elephants the way that Y’Tin does. He is the best handler in the village — and at thirteen years old, the youngest. Maybe he’ll even open up his own school someday to teach other Dega how to train wild elephants! That was the plan, anyway — back before the American troops pulled out of the Vietnam War, back before Y’Tin’s village was attacked by North Vietnamese forces, back before they had to start digging a massive, menacing pit, back before Y’Tin watched his life change in a million terrible ways.
Now, his bravery is truly put to the test: He can stay in his village, held captive by the North Vietnamese, or he can risk his life (and save his elephant’s) by fleeing into the jungle.
Newbery Medal-winning author Cynthia Kadohata brings us close to a world few people know about — but will never forget. Heartbreaking yet full of hope, Y’Tin’s story is one of lasting friendships, desperate choices, and all that we lose when we are forced to change. |

A Mountain of Crumbs: A Memoir By Elena Gorokhova $26 A Mountain of Crumbs is the moving story of a young Soviet girl’s discovery of the hidden truths of adulthood and her country’s profound political deception.
Elena, born with a desire to explore the world beyond her borders, finds her passion in the complexity of the English language — but in the Soviet Union of the 1960s, such a passion verges on the subversive. Elena’s home is no longer the majestic Russia of literature or the tsars. Instead, it is a nation humiliated by its first faltering steps after World War II, putting up appearances for the sake of its regime and fighting to retain its pride.
In this deeply affecting memoir, Elena re-creates the world that both oppressed and inspired her. She recounts stories passed down to her about the horrors of the Bolshevik Revolution and probes the daily deprivations and small joys of her family’s bunkerlike existence. Through Elena’s captivating voice, we learn not only the personal story of Russia in the second half of the twentieth century, but also the story of one rebellious citizen whose love of a foreign language finally transports her to a new world. |

To deal with these challenges, Bethenny developed ten rules for pursuing her goals with authenticity and drive, including:

FIND YOUR TRUTH: Dig deep inside and figure out what is authentic for you, not anybody else.
ACT ON IT: You don’t have to have a master plan. But unless you do something, you’ve done nothing.
EVERYTHING’S YOUR BUSINESS: Treat every job, person, and experience as if it could lead to your next big opportunity.
OWN IT: If you do it, say it, think it—then own it. Stand up for yourself and fully acknowledge who you really are.
Each rule is illustrated with compelling, sometimes funny, sometimes outrageous examples that are pure Bethenny. It’s easy to say no, to say “I can’t,” to expect the worst, and to doubt yourself. But your life can be better than “not bad” or “good enough.” It can be amazing. And by putting Bethenny’s rules together, you can use them to be more successful, more fulfilled, healthier, and happier than ever before. |

A Stone for Danny Fisher By Harold Robbins $15.95 As a teenager, Danny Fisher had all he ever wanted — a dog, a grown-up summer job, flirtatious relationships with older women — and a talent for ruthless boxing that quickly made him a star in the amateur sporting world. But when Danny’s family falls on hard times, moving from their comfortable home in Brooklyn to Manhattan’s squalid Lower East Side, he is forced to leave his carefree childhood behind. Facing poverty and daily encounters with his violent, anti-Semitic neighbors, Danny must fight both inside and outside the ring just to survive.
As his boxing becomes legendary in the city’s seedy underworld, packed with wiseguys and loose women, everyone seems to want a hand in Danny’s success. Robbins’s colorful, fast-talking characters evoke the rough streets of Depression-era New York City. Ronnie, a prostitute ashamed of how far she’s fallen and desperately in need of friendship; Sam, a slick bookie who wants to profit from Danny’s boxing talent; and Nellie, a beautiful but lonely girl who refuses to believe Danny is beyond redemption — each of whom has a different vision of Danny’s future — will help steer his rocky course.
Gritty, compelling, and groundbreaking for its time, A Stone for Danny Fisher is a tale of ambition, hope, and violence set in a distinct and dangerous period of American history. A classic, sexy bestseller by Harold Robbins, reintroduced to a whole new generation of readers. |

A Stone for Danny Fisher By Harold Robbins $12.99 As a teenager, Danny Fisher had all he ever wanted — a dog, a grown-up summer job, flirtatious relationships with older women — and a talent for ruthless boxing that quickly made him a star in the amateur sporting world.

A Trumpet in the Wadi: A Novel By Sami Michael $17.95 Leading Israeli novelist Sami Michael shares his gift for navigating the cultural conflicts in modern Israel with A Trumpet in the Wadi, a novel that transcends its Middle Eastern setting with an honest and heartbreaking story of impossible love and the strength of family.
Set in the months preceding the 1982 Israeli-Arab conflict in Lebanon, this beautifully written tale is the coming-of-age story of two fatherless Christian Arab sisters, Huda and Mary, who live in the wadi — the Arab quarter in the Jewish city of Haifa on the northern coast of Israel. An extraordinary bond of love and mutual respect unites the sisters — polar opposites from their appearances to their tempers. Huda, the narrator of the story, is thin and withdrawn and, after abandoning her chance at marriage a few years back, has prematurely resigned herself to the monotonous life of an old maid. Her younger sister, Mary, is voluptuous, carnal, and perennially unemployed. Wrapped in the love of their sometimes bitter mother, their iconoclast grandfather, and the cheerful and omnipresent neighbor Jamilla, the sisters’ lives change when a peculiar young Russian Jewish immigrant, Alex, moves into the upstairs flat. The melodies of the soulful trumpet player become the intoxicating theme music for Huda’s unexpected reawakening — and for Mary’s dangerous foray into a love triangle with the heir of the local Muslim mob and her country cousin.
Michael’s internationally acclaimed novel is a major achievement, illuminating the vast range of interlocking relationships between Jews and Arabs, Muslims and Christians, men and women. A Trumpet in the Wadi is an honest, witty, and ultimately heartbreaking story — one that draws on the conflicts in the Middle East, but one whose insights into love and family can cross all cultural and political boundaries. |

A Useful Woman: The Early Life of Jane Addams By Gioia Diliberto $54
The first biography in twenty-six years of Jane Addams — founder of the Hull-House settlement and winner of the 1931 Nobel Peace Prize — written with access to hundreds of new family documents.
”Today, Jane Addams is widely recognized as an extraordinary figure in our nation’s history, one of a roster of great Americans — Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. among them — who made lasting contributions to social justice. But as with the lives of many iconographic figures, the legend often obscures the real story.”
Frequently recognized as one of the most influential women of the century — and considered a heroine by nurses and social workers around the globe — Jane Addams had to struggle long and hard to earn her place in history. Born in 1860 on the eve of the Civil War, she lived during pivotal times when women were only beginning to create new roles for themselves (ironically building on the Victorian ideal of women as ministering angels).
Focusing on her metamorphosis from a frail, small-town girl into a woman who inspired hundreds of others to join her movement to serve the poor, A Useful Woman delves into the mysterious ailments and other troubles young Jane faced. Examining for the first time Jane’s physical and mental health and the effect of her father’s remarriage after her mother’s death, biographer Gioia Diliberto directly links Addams’s proneness to depression to her inability to conform to the mores of her time. Also, for the first time, she examines in detail Addams’s two marriage-like relationships with women.
With hundreds of previously unavailable documents at her disposal, Diliberto has written a fascinating study of one of the most intriguing and important women in history, concentrating on her difficult formative years with compelling — and groundbreaking — results. |

A Walking Guide: A Novel By Alan S. Cowell $19.95
Joe Shelby — a brilliant and daring combat reporter for a big magazine he refers to as “the comic” — is an Englishman who is at home only in the world’s trouble spots — Chechnya, Rwanda, Gaza — where he is face-to-face with murder, starvation, war crimes and the sound of bullets whistling past his ears. Now, after a life of triumphs, he must confront challenges he never imagined: lost love, incurable illness and failure both in his work and on his beloved high mountains.
His partner is glamorous French photographer and former fashion model Faria Duclos: beautiful, cool, sexy and wildly intoxicated by taking incredible risks as she puts her life in jeopardy to capture with her battered Leica camera both war’s killers and their victims — a woman high on danger who, in her own way, loves Joe.
Eva Kimberly is a privileged white Kenyan about to marry her childhood sweetheart, Jeremy Davenport, when Joe and Faria explode into her life at a fancy lawn party given by her wealthy father.
At once the story of a complex love triangle and a novel about risk taking and politics, Alan Cowell’s A Walking Guide uses an ostensibly simple mountain climbing expedition to explore the more complex inner struggles of its main character, Joe Shelby. On one level it is the story of a fit young war correspondent, fresh from the conflicts of the Middle East and Africa, coming to terms with a diagnosis of terminal disease that could cripple and kill him even as he walks high in the mountains. And as he walks, he is challenged to draw on reserves of courage far greater than those required by combat reporting. Confronted with hard trails and worsening weather in the rugged hills of the English Lake District, he must decide whether to pursue his goal — England’s highest peak — or abandon the attempt. He presses on, with perilous consequences.
A Walking Guide is also the story of tangled emotions involving two women whose relationships with Joe Shelby offer compet |
